67 cutlass won't start.

The car was starting fine then an intermittent problem began. With the key in the start position nothing was happening, but after a quick couple of retrys it would catch and turn the engine over. The problem has gotten worse until no more retrys at starting will work. So far I have replaced the battery, the ignition switch, and cleaned the terminals. I will get a couple starts and i think the problem is fixed, then nothing. All of the lights are strong and moving the gear selector does not help. Is this a starter issue? Thanks, Jim.

This could be anything between the battery and the starter - cables, connectors, wiring, neutral safety switch, etc - but my money is on the starter solenoid. Hint: while you have the starter out for solenoid replacement, throw in a set of brushes and a new starter drive. You don't want to deal with that 500 lb starter any more times than you need to.

Thanks Joe

Yeah, that was my guess too. I had forgot to metion that when we were able to get the starter to engage, that one time, the starter stayed egaged with the engine running and I had to quick disconnect the battery. So better to rebuild than a remanufactured starter? Thanks again, Jim. Nice collection you have there Joe!
