Howdy,

I have been a member for a while now and garnered tons of great info off the site but this is my first post.

I have a 70' Cutlass 442 W-30 that I have been restoring and it has a TH400. A shadetree mechanic got a hold of it and I now suspect that the crossmember is located in the wrong position. I have read on other posts that the TH400 uses the rearmost mounting bolts in the frame. Does someone have any pictures they can share or can provide guidance. I have had problems with 2 different sets of cables. One from Fusick and yearone. Neither seem to fit correctly now.

If the cross member was in the wrong place, you couldn't bolt the tail shaft mount in. I don't think you have a cross member problem.

You have a brake cable length problem. You don't need new cables for under the car. Sounds like you need just the shorter intermediate cable. This is the one that attaches to the parking brake app in the cabin that runs to the ones under neath. Its short....like 24'' or so...

The front and intermediate ebrake cables are both different for the TH400 application as compared to the other available transmissions that year. You can still get the correct cables from RockAuto. The front cable is longer with the TH400 and the intermediate cable is shorter. Also keep in mind that there are three different wheelbases for the 1968-72 cars (112", 116" and 121") and you need the correct intermediate cable for a TH400 for your wheelbase (front and rear cables are not affected by wheelbase). All 2dr cars used the 112" wheelbase in those years.

The correct intermediate cable should be just under 82" long. Dorman P/N C92352 should do it.
