I'm new to classic Oldsmobile. My Dynamic 88 has a 425 cid engine. The oil pressure light comes on when cranked. What could be the causes and how do I determine which cause is the culprit and how do I fix it?
Kindest regards,

That light is supposed to illuminate when cranking. It's how the system shows that it's working. The GEN and HOT/TEMP lights should also light up when cranking the engine. The question is, do any of these lights stay on when the engine is running?

Also, can you confirm that all the lights are coming on during cranking?

If the oil light is staying on when the engine runs the engine shouldn't be run except for testing until the cause is figured out.

Is the oil full, are there any taps or knocks? This could be minor or major, either the light system has an electrical issue or there is an engine problem. Next step would be an oil pressure test using a mechanical gauge.

Thanks for your reply. There is no knocking and the oil level is good. I've got the pressure sending unit out right now. I will check the pressure tomorrow when I get a gage.
