Sick's 69 H/O

WHELP...

most people on here know me and have helped me with one stupid thing or another on here lol. not sure if this is also a major build seeming it runs fine (to a certain extent).

For those of you who dont know me....
Names Tom (HI TOM!) and i have always loved olds for one reason or another. my love for the 442 came along with the movie Demoltion Man lol. Now i am 26 and for about the last 2 years i was searching for a 1968-1972 442 or 442 clone that i could call my own, scam after scam of the too good to be true olds i ran across a 1969 Hurst/olds. So after working out a deal with the owner and bank i was able to drive this bad johnny home. she runs but could use some work, especially with body and looks in general. BUT like any other old car once you run into one problem you find a million more lol.

Enough ranting and i will have pics up soon of my process but just reserving a spot on the threads for now.

So Far on what i have done

Just a recap on what i have done to the car since i got it has been:

New power steering line (Old one blew out while i was driving)

New Tires (tread actually blew out on my way there and i had to drive about 10 miles at like 25 MPH on the highway at that).

New Water pump, Thermostat (to fix the overheating problem)

Got the Radiator rebuilt due to it being 50%clogged and causing the over heating)

took out the aftermarket radio in hopes of getting an original one for at least the looks.

Today i decided to get enough time/energy to take the mat off of the trunk and see how bad it is below it and after about an hour of taking off the foam insulation and loose rust it doesnt look all that bad. looks like i will just have to sand her down and paint it. anyone know what these screw holes are for btw?

Right now the rear axle is removed from the car (not even sure if i did it right but it is outta there). Got the rubber out but cant get the metal sleeves out cause they rusted to the axle, smh. well pics up when i get a chance.

Just made a post on that - see if this helps:
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...tml#post225178

If originality is not important, you may buy a complete set of boxed arms for little dough. I got mine from Muscle Factory chevelle.
Cheaper and easier than refinishing, changing bushings, etc...

Well the factory sway bar only has 4 bolts - remove them and it is off.
The control arms are not too hard to do - just do one at a time.
Here is my experience at rear suspension work:

it wasnt as bad as i thought removing the lower arm. just the top bolt gave me some hell on getting it out lol. now it is just getting the rubber out of them and then the sleeves. the bushings were so bad on the upper i could just pull them out with a pair of pliers with a screw driver in the center for an anchor lol.

On the trunk floor I used two coats of POR15 and two cans of splatter paint while the POR15 was still wet.
The screw holes (hard to see in your photo) look like someone was wise and put them there for extra drainage. If I am not mistaken it looks like they put two in each of the body plugs(?).

Not sure if there was an issue with the removal, but next time unbolt the torque convertor from the flex plate and keep it with the tranny and you will save yourself some speedy dry.

Send us pics of the inside after teardown.

What the hell is that and is it two different clys that look like that or two pics of the same cly? What does the skirt of the pistons on those clys look like? Did the bearing look good on the mains and the rods?

same cylinder taken twice... felt it and it doesnt seemed raised but it definitely has some texture. Took more pictures of the pistons and the bearings (bearings looked fine to me though). and i apologize with my horrible picture taking skills lol, but i am doing all these pics with my phone lol

Where are these pics? Was the piston in the really bad cly hard to get out? Did you have to beat it out with a hammer? Can you take a few more of the bad cly? Maybe on looking from the bottom of the cly up?

edit: I blew it up and looked at it again. I think you have a busted cly there.

Wow were the main bearings just as bad as those rods? I'm supprised that thing was still running that long. Since you are enjoying the photo taking you should show the skirts of the pistons not the sides. Also some better up close pics of the bearing shell faces where the crank rides not the side of the bearings that does not tell us anything.

One thing I can say is the rod bearings were running without oil and would have spun with in seconds more of running. I still can't tell whats going on with the weird looking cly. Anyone else seen that before? This could be a good learning experience for everyone here.
