Some of those 17" Cragar's look pretty to me all the way around. I think they'd compliment that color of paint nicely.

Really a personal choice. Good thing is you can always do paint on steelies with whatever suits your whim. Personally I think the 442 is more deserving than poverty caps. Maybe a set of Ridlers would make that stand out nicely!

BTW Ted, if you're interested I have a set of NOS spoke wheel covers, but they're for 72. I bought them many moons ago for my car but am not sure I'll ever use them. They look fantastic and are still boxed and wrapped. If you're interested send me an email.

Very cool Ted! I can see it in my minds eye.

BTW, when I was going through the 68 Assembly manual the other day I noted something about the 442 dash stripes and thought of you. Forgot to post it, but oh well. Better late than never. According to the AM, those stripes are a decal, not paint.

Looking good Ted. It won't be long now.
Are you going with poverty caps and those wheels?

Thanks for the stripe info Allan...

Appreciate the support guys...
This car is by no means perfect, but we saved it from certain doom, which in my books is what the hobby is all about.

When we finished up yesterday I took it out and had some fun...from a standstill, both tires spun, and kept spinning during the burnout, so I assume it has limited slip?...the cutlass with the 2.56 will only spin the one

Adam...i have 4 choices with the rims and tires...

1. Steelies only
2. Steelies with poverty caps
3. Steelies with spoked hub caps
4. Cragers...15"

The tire size on front 225 70 14
Rear.....255 60 14

I could not buy a 255 70 so I went with the 60 which is a bit shorter....

So far the plain steelies pictured are favoured, but I will post pics and get your guys opinions

Ted

If you can find poverty's, they get my vote.
Congrats on the posi, sweet. Have you found the
code on the axle tube to verify what might be there?
My 69 came w/a 3.23, I think. I almost can't remember
that far back.

Not yet...the next time the car is on the hoist, I will check....the POP had the 3.07 rear end code if I remember correctly...
With the old, different size tires on it, I could only do one wheel peels.....am I missing something?

That's the nature of 'posi', limited slip, or whatever you want to call it vs an Open differential. Your 68 apparently does have posi.

??? You mean the same car that's doing 2 wheel burnouts now was only doing peg leg burnouts before?? Doesn't make much sense. I can't see it being tires either.

The code for 3:07 is T when you get it up on the hoist - it's stamped on the flange for the axle spreader hole. Not sure if you'll be able to read it after seeing what kind of rust was on the car prior to all this work.

The car has JL2 Power disc brakes, right? Unfortunately the CSM only lists the axle codes for the US built, so the axle stamping is ??? as far as I know. They MIGHT have used the same stampings as the US. If they did the Open diff would be code S4 and the Posi would be code S5. Curious to see what you end up with.

Rust?...what Rust

All I know is I was doing peg leg burnouts last fall, and yesterday I was doing two wheel peels...
JL2 brakes...yes

I will look for the code....hopefully I can see some of it

Did you change the gear oil and add some new posi additive? My 98 started acting strange like that at about 180K (km) and it turned out to need new gear oil and additive. Ran perfect after that. But with a 307 and probably 2.56 gears it wasn't a pavement ripper, but it never got stuck in deep snow either. I used it going ice fishing and it would go places some 4x4s couldn't. Course, that might also have been me just being dumb at the time

Quite possibly. If the old gear oil and additive was worn out it could affect clutch lockup.

Seems to me I can remember "back in the day" you could take a one legger and put it in reverse and shift to drive and floor it and it would stay locked like a posi until you let off. Best way to tell is jack it up and see if both tires rotate in the same direction when you manually rotate one wheel.

68 by a nose. Want me to come down and we can go side by side??? I think I'd put the accelerator through the floorboards though...

Looks great Ted! Did you find that rear trim yet? That car is starting to look more like it'll be the winner by a car length now...
