Hood Cowl for 68 442, thats what body shopped called it

Thought I had this bad boy almost down. Body shoppe removed the hood cowl that vents from the top of the hood through the dash and it was nothing but rotted fiberglass. This issue is, how does one create the vent holes, Is there an after market piece that can be put in after cutting out the diseased pieces ? I cant send the video f the night marish find if someone wouldnt mind letting me text it to them. They purport they can cut out the rot but how do the create the vent holes.. help please.

We all know what the cowl area is, but your explanation is a bit unclear. The factory put no fiberglass in that area. And the only way the cowl area delivers air to the interior is around the outside of the cowl, and then down, entering the kick panel area beside your feet on each side.

If the cowl is rusted through above or beside your feet, the interior and engine compartment must be stripped, fenders removed, and replacement cowl parts from a donor car must be welded in. No one makes patch panels.

You can put a video on a hosting site and put a link to it, or you can post pictures. Then we can be sure our advice is suitable.

Thank you for the reply. Here are a couple of pictures. So far it is just the top part of the cowl and not the box. I was able to find both items new OEM. But I just got the top part and am having it welded in after they clean it all up. After taking everything apart, think I found all the rust and am having it all replaced with metal and in this case this part for the top of the cowl assembly. at this point I just got this what is shown here (2nd image), in lieu of the whole assembly (1st image).

...

What you are seeing is a previous (bad) repair. There should be no fiberglass there.

and You're right. the OP was vague. The fiberglass was someone's bad attempt at a repair, rust cover up.

You have rust in a common place that many of us have had to deal with.

The fiberglass cover-up kept the metal from drying out, leading to more extensive damage than usual.

After windshield removal, the patch panel you found will clean up the area very well.

Save the screen and screws to put on the new panel. These pieces can be hard to find, and reproductions look a bit different.

Good luck!
