70 W-30 project
i thought i had looked at the date on this rear end but it was my W-30. i just went out to look at this one and it is not stamped for the date? have you seen any not stamped before? it has the L and the R on the other side stamped in it but not the date. it don't have enough corrosion to have corroded away the stamping.
The W-27's did not have a julian date casted into them, which make me think, they only made a two or three production runs. However, they put the assembly date as noted.
The next thing, would be to pull the cover and extract the julian dates from the posi unit and the ring and pinion. IT is MAW...

671 carrier @282@ julian (car is 10E date)
13A42 GM LS 2741... on ring gear
96 in paint on ring gear and pinion
13A42 GM AN... on pinion
398155 255... on other side of pinion
Joe.. we talked last winter about the NOS posi clutches. after i got this stuff home i found that the new ones were used and the old used ones put back in the boxes. i don't have any NOS clutches.

makes me feel REAL bad for pulling it out. i so wish i had documentation to this car. i am on the fence on what to do. i would almost like to restore this car and sell the other one. i love the light blue interior color of my other W-30 and not a fan of pearl. my other problem is that my other W-30 has the broadcast card and deserves a higher quality of restoration than i can afford to give it. to top that off, i live on dirt roads so a high level restoration is not a great idea anyway. i am likely going to stick with selling this one but makes me sick puling its "likely" original W-27.
maybe i should sell the Rallye and keep both these cars. God didn't make me rich so keeping them all is out of the question.

I spoke with Joe this afternoon. After seeing all of the circumstantial evidence that puts that rear end in that car at just the right time, and given the rarity of the rear end...I think we both agreed that the likely hood of someone finding a W-27 to put into the car that so perfectly matched it's build date is very slim.
Even without a broadcast sheet, I think that car should command at least 75% of the value of a 'paper' documented car. I also think it is a shame to separate the rear end from the car, given that it is the only thing that can tie it to being a true W-30. I also think it is a shame to separate them because once you do, that car will forever be lost to the world of run of the mill chassis.

after two weeks of hard thought i still had not decided what rear end to put into this car. i was going to put one in tonight and my wife came out to see what i was doing. we talked more about this and she said she didn't want to hear me cry over selling this rear end for the rest of our lives. She said to put the TM code 3.42 in the car and move on. after that i thought about it and she is right. she told me to not sell my 72 W-30 in 2000, i did and cried about it ever since. i know many people are not going to agree with this decision, i don't like having to make the decision. there is another factor that is playing into this. i have had 3 people contact me about the rear end wanting to buy it. at the time i talked to two of them i thought i was going to put it in the car to sell it. both people said they would buy the car just to get the rear end out and re sell the car. if i knew that happened after i sold the car it would make me pi$$ed that i sold it because i could have done that myself. please don't hate me about this. it will likely go into my W-30 that is 2 weeks newer, also with 3.23 gears. (i will never claim it is original to my car but at least the date is close and the gears are correct)
i got the rear end back in and took a couple pictures of the bottom side. the floor pans are real solid. there is some pitting and surface rust on the frame and a little in other areas but still nice. most of the undercoat is still on the bottom. i had to change the brake lines from the front all the way to the wheel cylinders. also changed the wheel cylinders because the bleeders broke off. i will get the tank from Scott and it will be on the road.
i plan to pick up another fuel pump this week. last time i drove it, i stepped on it and acted like it ran out of fuel. the carb i put on it should be ok and the filter is good so i hope it is the pump. i also picked up a new set of points.

TM code rear end. inside looks great, i forgot to take a picture before i put the cover back on.
don't laugh at my brake line job. the only line available was to long and i had to put the waves in it to take up length.

Ha ha I have a car that came with brake lines like that. The guy had used some rolled up tubing from the front to the back, and it looked like he just sort of vaguely straightened it before flaring and left it hanging. It looked like this ~~~~~ only not so neat ha ha. I just bought some new axle tubes from Inline Tube, they were only like $35.
i had not planed to paint anything to avoid anyone thinking i was trying to hide something when i sell it. well the core support looked so bad i had to do something. i bead blasted the radiator top plate and painted it. the top of the core support i just spray bombed.
i got it running very nice. has much more lope to it that i thought it would. i took it for a 9 mile drive and performed great. the steering wheel is crooked but it drives straight and the suspension works nice and tight. i tried out the posi and it works as it should. it is fun taking cars out after sitting as long as this one has. i adjusted the idle down to 850 RPM in drive and took it out again for a 7 mile drive. i plan to get plates for it this week and drive it till i list it for sale. i think i will list it later this month on eBay. if i knew where to price it at i would list it here.

dug through my bumpers and found a nicer back one to put on it. it isn't perfect but better than the one that was on it. still need to cut off the excess tail pipes sticking out the back. not sure what was up with that. i hope to find a better front bumper but not sure if i have one.

if i didn't need the money i would very much consider it. have you ever posted pictures of that car?... for those that don't know, Scott has the most solid post coupe i ever seen and for an f85 has great options.
i wasn't going to list this car for another week or two but went ahead and listed it. i don't know if it will bring enough to cover the value of the parts so i set a reserve high enough to cover what the parts are worth. don't get me wrong, i will not part the car out if it don't sell but don't want it to go to cheep.
thanks to all that helped me decide what to do... after all the help it turned out to be pretty easy when the wife told me what i was doing.

I don't have any heartache over it when you put it the way you did. And you're right, someone is probably just going to pull it anyway so you MAW put it in your W-30. Sometimes just having the rare part is worth more than the money you'd have gotten for it
Is that f85 Scott and you (Eric) are referring to a Rallye 350? I know he (and you) has a Rallye and I'm pretty sure it is an f85. I'm still kickin' around buying one, and I'm still kickin' around selling my '72 "U" code car. Something keeps telling me to keep that "U" code car. For the money I have in it, and the cost of the parts it has (an extremely nice REAL O.A.I. hood), I should probably keep the darn thing. I know as soon as I sell it, I'll regret it.......................
now that i have had more time to think about my (her) decision, i feel like we made the right one.
