68 442 Rear Bumper Assembly Question
68 442 Rear Bumper Assembly Question
If you look at the 1968 Assembly Manual picture attached...Pad part number 400768 and Pad part number 401431 are pictured but long gone from my car. Not trying to be correct just wondering if you guys felt these were functional pieces (like using a bumper jack...YIKES! That's despicable) and if you have them on your rides still?
Thanks
Tom

My car had those pads so I re-installed them when we put the car together. It seemed to me that those pads didn't touch, or rub up against, much of anything and I did wonder what purpose they served - perhaps as some sort of cushion if someone rear ends you? I don't know. But, as a loyal and faithful (as much as I can) follower of the assembly manual, and little ability to question why, those pads are on my car!

yes I still have them on my 68 and they are certainly functional, they keep the rear bumper and the brackets from contacting the body both during assembly and when using a bumper jack to lift the car, although all of the 68's I have taken apart had the 401431 bumpers installed on the rear bumper bracket not on the pinch weld for whatever reason, and since that is where I found them that is where they will stay.
My current 68 is as early build (Sept) Z code car and it didn't have this part, never did...Cant open the PDF but I assume your discussing the piece above the filler neck that's is held in place with a single self tapping sheet metal screw between the bumper and the tail light panel screwed into the pinch weld? I have seen some with and with out it. I've had several 68s that didn't have it nor any sign of the hole. I stripped a 4 door and a vert that did. The 4 door was a late build Canadian car. I think the vert was a Linden car dont remember the build I want to think late maybe 4 (April). I haven't found a rhyme to its reason yet other than the 4 door & vert connection.
