My parents picked up this 1990 Toronado Trofeo in 1992 with 1300 miles on it. It has been in good storage all these years but been neglected. Not been polished or waxed since at least 1992 and maybe since it left the factory. The paint is good but the clear coat is in need of major attention. It has 41,782 miles on it now and going to finely get the attention it deserves. I picked it up and doing some little projects on it for a few days. Here is a list of things needed.
Headlight door motor needs rebuilt with new bushings
Repair damage from backing into a post at the park
Gear select code (I think and hope it is the neutral switch)
New struts for the hood
Hood insulation needs cleaned up
Taking to a professional shop for paint correction, polish, and ceramic coating
Steering wheel is crooked from a poor alignment years ago
I started this morning with polishing the white paint off from behind the wheel from where dad backed into a white post at the park. I picked up another wheel well molding but I think the one from the car is better. I need to work on it before installing it back on the car. Can't tell from these pictures but had to bend back the metal area inside the wheel well to get the outer area to sit closer to correct.
I pulled the hood insulation and lightly sprayed it with Super Clean and rinsed it off. It helped a lot but still not as good as I had hoped for. I may try and spray it with some interior paint and see if it helps. I picked up a NOS one from Scott Winn (is there anything he don't have) so if this one does not turn out as good as I want I will just put the NOS one on.
I am going to need help and not sure where to look. It shows "gear select problem" on the information center. I took the neutral switch off and took it apart. Every single circuit is working correct and like it should. I cleaned the old grease out of it and put new grease in it. I have a GREAT transmission guy and he said the transmission is perfect and nothing wrong with it. We just can't get rid of this code and everything works perfect. I did pick up a used switch I am going to install next but I don't see why it would help when the original one tests good.
I Googled it and found where someone had this problem in 2004 and in 2006 but no information that helps.
This car had never been polished or even waxed sine it was new. Had it professionally done and then a ceramic coat. Turned out FANTASTIC!!!!! Very pleased with their work!
Thanks. I have stopped looking into it for now. I have chased all the wiring and all is good. The neutral switch is not available from GM or aftermarket. I put two used ones on it and not fixed it. I am trying to find an NOS one. Another Trofeo guy swears that both my switches are bad and is the problem. I am doubting it.
I saw your post about this car on FB. Sure is a nice example. Are you fixing it up for your folks to drive, or have you officially added this one to your fleet as well?

This is their car. Just getting it back to where it should be for them. I am out of room and nowhere to put another car. I have a Jetfire coming from Alabama to work on for a guy and have to find somewhere to put one of mine till I get his done. I suspect I am going to have to set one of my cars outside till I get the Jetfire done.
