1971 442 Convertible Restoration

Just getting started on this convertible. I had been searching for a first gen convertible when a friend told me about this car. It's rusty but a good project. I'm going to restore it the best I can. This will be my first frame off. Let's get started.

The car is numbers matching, with AC, PS, PB, auto w/dual gate, and 3.08 anti spin rear. The body is going to require a lot of work to sort out. The car looks like someone did a bondo and spray can job on it a while back. The quarters are shot and the fenders are rusted at the bottom. There's a cutlass supreme grill on it from a previous incident. By the way, are those 70 fenders? It's a huge relief to see the amount of expert knowledge on this site. I'm looking forward to this adventure.

She's in.

She's up

3.08 posi. Looks like somebody buffed that axle tube, I had to use brake cleaner to get through the protective layer of grime.

Passenger side front and drivers rear floor pans need to be patched. Otherwise, not too bad.

Small rusty area there.

Driver side rear floor pan.

Oddly clean frame in some areas.

In the market for a clean trunk lid.

Got the fenders off. The fenders look good other than the lowers. Tons of **** in the drivers side cowl.

Drivers lower cowl.

That is the contents of the driver side cowl.

Pretty typical, I had to rebuild the drivers side on my California car. Prepare to get a little dirty..

Was able to get the engine out last night. Took a bit of a juggling act to get the engine stand and the engine hoist to cooperate.

Hoist and stand not compatible.

If the boom on your hoist did not have enough arm, I believe I would have gotten creative. IE: lower the chassis. I guess it is a moot issue since it’s all coming apart anyway!

Edit: I see, your hoist interferes with the engine stand (blocks under hoist legs). I have encountered this as well with one of my storage dollies.. Annoying

No, it came out fine.
It was the legs on the hoist that wouldn't let me get closer than a foot and half to the engine stand once I had it out. I had to put the engine down, chock the hoist legs up high enough to get the engine stand legs under the hoist legs, and pick it up again to get it close enough to connect.

I’m glad you took pictures of that. I’m about to pull my engine and it looks like I have very similar hoist and stand.
