This week, little by little after work, I was able to get the side stripes laid out and masked. It took a while for me to lay these down. They don't look like they would be that difficult when you see them on cars but there are a lot of opportunities to screw these up. I documented original stripe sizes and location before I stripped the car so I am pretty confident they are pretty close to where they need to be. I got the car in the booth this am and masked off all morning. By noon I was painting. By early afternoon I unwrapped (unmasked) it like a Christmas present. It was very satisfying. I now have 1-2 more coats of clear but I want to try and get the hood on for that, we'll see?

Got the final two coats of clear on the body today. I have some orange peel and a couple sags I'm gonna have to deal with now but its shiny again and at least I can start disassembling the paint booth. I start the car regularly now because I love listening. My mind is now on cutting and buffing and interior.

It does feel good to get to this point, it's been a lot of work but I enjoy sharing this experience with the Olds community. These cars have been in my life since high school.

It appears you base coated (how many coats)
Clear coated (how many coats)
Sanded the clear coat?
Added the stripes.
Clear coated again.
Did I get that right?

This is what I did and I am not a professional so please know this: Some pros might find my method wrong and I understand this. Two coats of base followed by 2 coats of clear. Sanded smooth with 1200 grit, added stripes followed by two more coats of clear to be cut and buffed.
Really can't tell by pics but I did the final cut and buff today, well not all today, over the past couple weeks. I still have some polishing to do so it should get even better but I'm happy with it. I just have to try not to ding or scratch now. I think I'll bubble wrap it.

Yeah, be werwy, verwy careful (ala Elmer Fudd) at this point cause sometimes when the goal is getting near, we drop our guard.
I won't tell about the time when I just got done painting my 1969 MGB/GT (BRG in lacquer with clear) and I was putting a trim piece on and slipped a screwdriver across the new paint!
It reminded me every day after that I'm not a real painter and I don't even try to blend. LOL
Looks great. Don’t get nervous, that’s when something will happen. Just keep moving along like you have been, careful but not paranoid. Drive it the same way… so far it has worked for me. About 800 miles on mine, dinners, cruising and some trips to the store. So far so good!

Im still cutting and buffing. I went back and scuffed with 1200 then 2000 because I'm trying to make it flat as possible. After the initial cut and buff it looked good but I noticed a little texture in the reflection so after coming this far I said why not. I started with 1200 then 2000. I have 3M's perfect it 1,2,3. I hit all steps. I wanted to do the fenders mostly for emblems so I could get inner fender wells on at some point. I also did trunk emblems.I had NOS W30 and trunk emblems. I also re-did the hood. The hood really looks nice IMO. It's the little things like this that reward me for all the labor with the buffer.
Thanks you guys, As it gets closer to the end it’s the little detail things that add up and take time. Easy to rush and miss things, thats when accidents happen or quality suffers.
Spent the last couple weeks cutting and buffing. I think I'm 90% done. I'll do some more once everything is together. Today, I got the interior kick panels installed so I could install E-brake pedal then the original red front inner fender wells.
Starting to focus on interior. I have all the original seats to the car. The driver seat had a rip, the pass seat and rear seat were intact but showing their age. I could have maybe cleaned and saved the back seat but with everything else new it didn't make sense. I got the whole interior from Legendary close to two years ago maybe more? I have the seats to re-cover, install interior panels and restore console.
I started stripping the seats in preparation for re-covering. I was hoping to just switch everything out without dealing with rusty frames but the surface rust was enough that I will have them all blasted and I will re-paint pryor to re-covering. Gonna try and get them to the blaster next week. In the mean time I have plenty other stuff to do.

In the end, you would be disappointed not addressing all the seat frame rust issues. You are doing the right thing blasting and painting the frames prior to reupholstery. Motor on!
