Engine Shop

Stopped by the engine shop today. Engine is ready to be picked up. Just needs to be primed. One cylinder was rusted from sitting. had to take motor 40 over. Shop also went with a new oil pan. The original pan had one step. The new one has two steps. I think the clearance will be tight. Not used to seeing a gold engine.

Seats

Weekend project was re-upholstering the seats. My step-son did all the work with the upholstery. Used an interior from Legendary, which is a local company here. Step-son did a great job with the new upholstery. We re-did the seat tracks. Cleaned and painted the springs. Added all new hard wear and chrome trim. Normally, a rear seat is fine. Except on convertibles. The rear seat looked fine. But the vinyl was all dried out. Found the broadcast car when I took the seat back off the passenger bucket. Nice surprise

Drive Shaft redone

Redid the drive shaft - Sanded down with 40 grit discs and worked up to 220 grit. Put on the stripes - Black and Pink according to the assembly manual. Then two coats of flat clear. Not perfect - still shows some of the pitting. New U joints

Steering Column, Radiator

Here are some photos of the steering column and the radiator before the install. Cleaned up the original tag on the radiator. The CH also corresponds to the code on the passenger tank. Think 74 is the date which makes sense.

Radiator Support

Went to install the radiator. would not fit in the saddle brackets of the new core support. Fit in the saddles of the original top plate fine. Measured the saddles - there is a half inch difference in the length where the radiator would sit. Looks like I have to take out the core support and fix the saddles. Don't know if anyone else has had this problem

looking good, the IF should be the tank on the drivers side. I can't remember what 74 relates to but it is not a date code. ED is the code for the whole radiator assembly. IF and CH are for the tanks 74 is for something, we had a thread about this somewhere

More Parts

Here are a couple of photos. Detailed out the A/C Condenser. Now that the repop radiator support has been fixed for my 4 core radiator, I finished the installation of the shroud, radiator, and condenser. Except for the radiator support, the only repop part was the Evap Hose from Classic Air.

Worked on one of the door panels. Put on new lower carpet. New arm rest bezels and new reflectors. The stainless trim was buffed out.

Headlight assemblies detailed out. Stuff that you won't see once the headlight trim is put on. Still had to clean up all the old stuff and restore it back to what it should be

Looks like a first-class restoration! Keep us posted on the progress. You are lucky NOT to have to use too many aftermarket parts. I really like the Pace Cars (I went to the Indy 500 25 consecutive years, haven't been in a few, but still get my tickets) and wouldn't mind owning one. Even though part of me is a purist, I'd HAVE to build the motor a little and "stick" in a 4-speed.

Nice I love those pace car stripes w the red pin stripe around th eedge the tri color there really sets it off nicely

FYI a free program like IRFANVIEW allows you to do a batch resize of images so you can set your image size and quality and then resize a bunch of images at once.

Looking GREAT! Weird that someone would paint a real Pace Car in anything but it's original colors.

You said you found the "broadcast car" in the rear seat. What is that? Do you mean the build sheet?

The 8x10 is the build sheet not found in Lansing built cars, and the broadcast card is 4x8 sometimes found in the car. A look at the two shows what info each contains.

The build sheet for Lansing cars...Are you saying that Lansing didn't put the build sheets in the cars? If that right, could explain why I didn't fine one in my '69 W-30 when I rerstored it... But thought the build sheets were put in all cars.

Correct, they had a policy of throwing them in the trash when the cars were built, Lansing was know for having a tighter policy for the building of their cars, and adhering to the rules for the disposal of the build sheets, which were of course, used to get the right options on the car..but build sheets were not supposed to go with the cars, other plants around the country were less stringent when following this rule.

Very nice car and pics of the process. I feel your pain with the overspray as I had that happen to me as well. Very frustrating to have to do a good job twice on the same thing.

Finally getting decent weather. Had problems with one set of decals. Took longer than I wanted to get all the door decals and the other Indy decals. Just got the decals on yesterday. Fired up the engine and had a valve sticking. Engine shop came over and took care of the problem. Just getting the engine broken in. Ran her for half an hour outside.

Top goes on next week if weather continues to be dry.

Great thread! I have taken possession of the pace car as of April 2022, I have created a new build thread for a bit of a "refresher" on the car.
