1970 442 Pace Car Restoration

Now that I have the pictures figured out I can start a restoration thread.

Finally got the car dropped off a week ago at the restoration shop. I was lucky enough to find 2 mint GM NOS quarters. We are starting with the drivers side rear quarter and inner quarter.

Now passenger quarter. After getting quarter off we found this sides inner quarter in excellent shape! Both quarters lined up and fell into place great.

Looking good! The 70 pace car is one of my faves of all time. I am envious enough, but one question. How does your garage stay soooooooo clean?? "

well i gotta say progress is going great! both quarters hung and lines are perfect. i am very glad i asked my friend "larry" at pugesekmotorsports to handle the restoration on my car. he is very familiar with gm A bodys although his forte is dropping early corvette bodies on modern suspension. some of his work/fab skills would blow you away!! check out his website. its always nice to know your car is in the hands of a perfectionist. will get more pics as progress continues as everything on this resto will be done at his shop.

Charlie, I enjoyed this thread immensly. Keep up the great work. Now I'm curious about something. I saw that when you took off the 442 emblems on the PS fender the paint underneath was red. Also can see that there is red under the white where the patch panels were welded (nice job on that BTW; it looked really ugly under there). Do you know the history behind that?

Allan I noticed that too, but did you see it doesn't look like there is any red under the paint pealing from the rocker panels so I was thinking the fender was replaced at sometime and they didn't even bother to take off the emblems

well the car got its arrest me red paintjob in 1978-79 with some shoddy bodywork, then in 1995-96 was repainted back to its stock colors with even more worse bodywork and prep. it seems they just taped everthing off and blew the white paint on. i never get why people do such crappy work like this. anyway its getting done right this time. and the fenders look to be original with the flat edges and the right holes for the emblems with no extra holes.

I noticed it first because there was red paint under where the 442 emblems were. Then when I looked closer at the feathering on the lower fender where the patch panels were, I could see the layering of white under red under white. Nice to see that Charlie has it under control.

been working on the dash, finished with paint on body + all bolt on panels. quality material really makes a difference in final finish for sure! {larry if you read this you are the man}. the paint that was sprayed on door jambs and on hinge area is so perfect it does not need to be touched. just got a set of nos front and rear speakers from a gm nos parts hoarder after 6 months of bothering him {thanks joe}. waiting for carb to come back from plater. seem to have all the stuff to finish now. will post new pics of dash next week. it is sooooo nice to start see it all coming together now.
