1969 Delta 88 Royale

Hey Everyone,

New to the forum and Oldsmobiles in general. Have owned and worked on several GMs over the years. Soon to be the owner of my great grandpas 69 delta 88 royale. It was mainly used as a church car until his passing in 84 where it’s sat since. Has 30k original miles. Has been covered and garage kept in the Midwest. I plan on bringing it back west and doing a frame off restore. Currently finding parts, info and ideas. As of now the plan is to keep it NA but would go FI in the future. Torquestorm twin SCs or twin turbos… I’ve got some parts saved but am looking for a good cam recommendation. As of now the parts I have saved are as follows:
  • Scat forged crank 4.250 lift
  • Eagle H beam forged rods 6.735in
  • Wiseco forged pistons 4.155 bore
  • edlebrock rpm 61025 heads
  • Edlebrock rpm air gap intake manifold
  • posi 3.73 rear

A few other things I am considering: upgrade 2 bolt mains to 4 bolt splayed mains and a 4l80 I have laying around in the garage. Not looking to restore this thing to factory. I want modern parts like brakes, suspension etc mixed in with the original like the interior will stay stock. It will not be a garage queen. I do plan on running it hard and often. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Also, if there is anything in particular about the 455 I should look out for? I’ve read about the 455 having oil return issues, what are some solutions for that? Thank you in advance!

You certainly have an interesting agenda. You do realize thats a 4200 pound "B body" car ?
You're a long way from cam selection.
Are you sure those 3.73's fit in your differential ?
Beware of where you get your information. Also forget ChatGTP to answer questions.
Obviously you found one myth already..... 455 having oil return issues.
Another myth is "a high volume oil pump will pump the oil pan dry".?
Another myth "you need to run oil restrictors".?

A 1970 delta 88 with a 455 4bbl in a coupe is a good performer in stock format and a good looking car. To top it off this is a Royale with 30K original miles. Personally I'd leave it stock and try it first before making modifications, you may be pleasantly surprised. Does it by chance have factory dual exhaust and/or a rear sway bar?

yesh at the moment I’m just coming up with new ideas. Car isn’t currently in my possession. So I’m really just spit balling and trying to figure out as much as I can. It was given to my Aunt who obviously did nothing with it. I’ve had my eye on it since a child and finally got back home to check it out. She recently said she would hand it over to me, since then I’ve been searching high and low for information. All of my experience is with LS based engines. Have a rebuilt LM7 and LQ9 I put in an 86 glastron. Rebuilt a few 4l60s and a 4l80. I’m just now getting into carbs and would like any information I can get. So I’m just posting things I’ve heard of, hoping that some of yall can shine light on the validity of these claims.

Honestly didn’t get much of a chance to peer underneath. I hadn’t seen it in a few years so really I just checked out the body and interior while I cleaned out my grandmothers garage. I’ll be taking a trip back there soon where I’ll have much more time to really look at it and get better pictures.

I appreciate it! I just went based off the fact it was purchased around the time my aunt was born in 69, but may well could have been purchased right after in 70.
