Cleaning up and upgrading

So she now looks nice and pretty on the outside. Inside is another story. I know she was masked and papered during paint, but, it looks like a war zone inside due to the dust and debris. First step vacuum. Second was to use Simple Green, hot water and a plastic tire scrub brush to the entire interior.

It looked like after vacuuming....

So after scrubing and washing, then wet/dry vacuuming, she got two days to dry completely. Then a nice coat of brushed on rust proofing paint.

Another couple days to let the paint cure. Then came a task that was long, sticky, tiring. I decided to sound proof the entire interior, floor, roof, rear side panels, kick panel and sail panel areas with rubber based FatMat. It's a product like Dynamat. It is like trying to wall paper your car with self-adhesive wall paper that will pull paint of instead of peeling off.

I will be doing the doors and trunk areas once the windows and lights, etc are back in.

Next task is the windows and front end headlight areas.

Refinished Front End / Grill Parts

It seems like this would be a good spot to show some of my refinished parts. My original headligt housing and grill were painted black. They all were cracking and peeling. I repaired the cracks and made/replaced some broken.missing tabs. Then all parts were hand sanded with 260 followed by 400 grit sand paper. The left housing was so bad I got a donor from filbily, thanks Kurt. I used Krylon's Dull Aluminium and SEM Trim Black for the paints.

Driver side headlamp housing.

Passenger side core.

Grill

Here is how my parts turned out. Three coats of each colour with a little sand between coats 1 and 2 to smooth out few spots. It is closee the factory. I like the black grill over the factory aluminium. The black and aluminium line is not in the correct spot. I choose this line so it would flow better with the black grill. I like the finished result.

My hood louvers/grills were painted black. These were chemically stripped. Cleaned and painted. It was a very long process to mask all the tiny thin edges but it worked out well.

Next post - Parts go back on.

I finished off the front end today. The head light housing, lights, bezels abd chrome/stainless trim all back on. It might need a little more tweaking to get the lines all perfect. Here's how it looks.

The only thing missing is the hood ornament.

Next I have to finish the windows....

Good job - funny, as I had the lighter blue on a '69 442 coupe, with the 3-tone blue bucket interior. Was going to paint that side stripe too, with a darker blue! 30 yrs. ago! [another I shoulda kept!!]
Great to see it on a cutlass!
Love the pics - keep 'em coming!
