Brake Release Handle Installation?

Am trying to install the factory replacement brake release GM handle (P/N#3893179) on the parking brake mechanism. The old one was broken and I wound up having to twist the remains off with a pair of vise grips. The new one doesnt seem to want to be pressed on very easily, and I'm afraid of breaking it by using too much force. Is there a tip on how to install it?

Also, the replacement part looks significantly (at least to me) different than the OEM - handle is "thicker" and the font used is a little fatter.

I've seen these on ebay often, but never purchased one. Is that where you got yours? My only thought is to drill it out a little larger and use expoxy to attach it. I know using it will be putting pressure to pull it off. I'm not sure how the factory ones were installed. Anyway, TTT to see if anyone else has some thoughts. John

drilling and epoxy is about the only choice. I have done that on some as the replacements never seem to fit right.

Mine broke too. I pulled the whole e brake ratchet thingamajig out of a junker just for the unbroken handle. Maybe you can run a die on the metal rod to make some threads and then tap the handle and screw it on? I never had the actual handle off...

I bought one from a Chevy place and when it came it looked nothing like the original plus it barely fit. I went and found a used one. I see The Parts Place has one that looks like an original.
