woodgrain removal
woodgrain removal
I am currently trying to spruce up my all original instrument panel. I have removed the gauge bezel and wanted to repaint it but I am having trouble removing the woodgrain. what is the proper way to remove the woodgrain without accidently damaging it? I was considering buying new woodgrain but 100 bucks for a piece of fake wood 1 centimeter thick seemed like a little much!
Mine is a 70 and the trim is actually metal with woodgrain color and was just glued down I used a little heat to get the glue to soften so I could lift it off careful not too much to melt the bezel.

Woodgrain removal
I would try a small area with Easy Off Oven Cleaner
if you want to strip the IP down to bare .
Let it soak a while and peel it off under running water.
I use it to strip old paint and chrome plating from dash cores.
Works great and wont harm the plastic.
After stripping get your self some Plastic Razor Blades.EBAY 100 for $10.00 .
Use the razor blades to scrape any of the remaining adhesive.
I use dawn dish soap to loosen up the glue.
