Squeaking dashboard

In my 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass whenever I’m driving it squeaks and is beyond irritating. Recently, I’ve pulled the dash board out because it was cracked and I figured that because the noise is coming from under the dash and not the dashboard it’s self. That while I have it out I might as well try and stop the squeaking noise while I have access to the general area. If anyone can help me with the squeaking and how to stop it it would be much appreciated.

You've got to determine which mating surfaces are not firmly connected. That is where the squeak is likely originating. It could be any one, or more, of the mounting locations, or perhaps a spot weld that has separated. By mounting locations, I'm referring to any of dash-to-body, accessory-to-dash such as ashtray, radio, switch bezel, etc. Steering column-to-dash, on and on...It may be helpful to do a ride-along with an assistant, using a good ear and one of those mechanic's stethoscopes to help narrow down the general area. I don't envy you this task!

You can add thermal and sound insulation to the inside of your dash when you reassemble it. Also, make sure you reassemble the dash per the FSM/CSM with all the fasteners. Hopefully that cures the squeak.

I had/have a squeak that was driving me insane. I partially fixed it as I discovered it was coming from the floor heater assembly. I am not entirely sure how to properly repair it so I temporarily fixed it by wedging some Styrofoam behind it. Just thought I'd throw that out there because it might not be dash related.

Okay, thanks! I never considered that as it’s primarily in the dash area.

okay, thanks. I would’ve posted a video I have of it squeaking but I can’t attach a video on here.

Realize that the dash is retained in the car by the dash insert and not so much the pad. The insert might have a broken tab on it.

If you need hardware I'd just go to the local hardware store to find it. I prefer Ace Hardware over Home Depot or Lowes for nuts, bolts & screws.

If you're doing a concours restoration then you'll have to get the hardware from a parts car.

Can you tell if it sounds like metal or plastic rubbing? That may narrow down the potential sources. Mine has a metallic sound that I am fairly certain is the left most dash mount stud rubbing in its hole due to a slightly loose nut.
