map light

I think i love this sight!!!!...just removed the mirror from my map light review mirror.

Took half hour fiddling with it then read to put in boiling water. 3 second later, removed with no damage.

Thanks forum for extremely helful advice.

Now, where should i send it to be resilvered?

Guess I missed the beginning - why, and what happened after the boiling water?

When i boiled it the glue loosened. I used a butter knife and easily got behind the glass. Gently slid down and seperated it.

Question..is the rubber gasket glued to the stainless backing or does it just get pressed in?

The mirror was removed due to severe clouding

Those old mirrors allways seem to cloud up. Nice job getting that done it can be tedious. I've tried that without boiling...and its not so easy.

It seems like I have access to the bulb in the map light. Should I change it, while I have the mirror removed. I don't know if they sell the bulb. Anyone try this?

I replaced my map light bulb with this one #563 MINIATURE BULB RIGID LOOP BASE

It is also the same as the glove box and dash light near the radio.

Will the grey rubber gasket hold its shape and be reusable after? Also is resilvering done at any glass shop or are there specialists?

My rubber gasket is exactly the same as before I boiled it. I just priced some local shops and they said sure they can do it....for about 200 bucks. On this site they said there is a place in chicago that does it for 20 bucks. I will find the post and repost it here

This is the place that was recommended to do it for 15 dollars plus shipping. I called them and left a message. I will let you know how it goes.

Everyone wants to make a new one. I don't know if it's because it's harder to strip and resilver or the can make more money creating a new one?

I just checked Hemmings and they had a few resilvering services. I contacted Ron's Corner. He said he will do it for $24 plus 8.50 shipping and handling. I will let you know how it comes out.

Thanks again. I take it from your comment, Silver Service wasn't interested in silvering. Seems odd after reading what I wrote. I'll be interested to know how you make out with Ron's Corner. Are you sending your mirror off soon? $25.00 still isn't too bad a price.

Silver Service

Recently had mine done by these guys also for $15 + the ride. Came back looking new. I had also asked them to reattach the rubber gasket because I didn't want to take a chance of messing it up and they obliged. Highly recommended.

I received my two map light mirrors back from Silver Service Inc. all reassembled in the grey gaskets and both like new; and all for $15.00 each. Great deal. What's the best adhesive to attach the stainless steel backing? Crazy glue? Any ideas? Thanks guys for the help on where to get this service done.

A couple years ago I bought some maplight parts from a mirror restoration professional. He'd buy the old mirrors like those described here and fix them up like new and resell on ebay. Anyway, here is a quote from an email I kept in regard to this topic:

"... Reglue the vinyl mirror holder with the new glass installed to the stainless housing with a suitable glue. Automotive weatherstrip adhesive seems to work good for me"

Just found this thread. Great info sharing guys.
Brian, the rubber on your car is grey because it is 1971. Your mirror will also have a bright chrome finish. In 1972 the mirrors were changed. The backs were coated black, and the rubber mirror gasket was changed to black - to match. The change in coloring was mandated because of the glare off the mirrors to oncoming drivers.

Please post pics of your finished products. I have several of these mirrors that need re-furbishing. BTW, I found a guy on evilbay a while ago that sells the little decals for changing the mirror bulb. (guess it's only if you're doing a 'concours' resto)

If his name is Greg, then that's the same guy. If I recall he lived in Canada.

Does anyone know if these guys are still in business? I've tried to call several times over the past week or two, but their phone just rings and rings, then goes to generic answering machine message. No call backs as of yet.

Their pricing is very good, but may need to go to another vendor to get my mirrors resilvered.

If I remember I had the same issue a few years back but eventually they did answer and I sent the mirror in. I can try to call for you as well.
