rearview mirror map light

The maplight on the rearview mirror does not work. I have not tried to trouble shoot it. It does not bother me that is doesn't work, I am just wondering has anyone heard of replacing the LED light? It could be a bad wire too.

What year car?

Depending on year, either the lights or ignition has to be on for the mirror map light to work.

In my '71 it works with the ignition and lights off.
It not an LED, just a basic tube type bulb, It's acceseed by squeezing the lens/switch on each side and pulling it down, it should show the type bulb you need and how to get to it in the owner's manual.
Could be a bad wire, loose connection under the dash, dirty contact, bad bulb, bad ground, not much more to the things.
Those mirrors are all of a sudden worth big bucks, for the man who has everything (else) I guess.

I have a mirror that's not working either. I spent over an hour messing around with it to try to get it to work. What I finally did was rig up a 9 volt to the switch, and mirror casing. What I figured out is that the copper prong opposite the one that contacts the bullet connector( hot wire) doesn't seem to be long enough to contact the case to ground it. I had to twist the prong and wedge it in there and the light lite up, but there is no way I could, or would, keep it like that. The switch/bulb housing doesn't look like it was modified in any way. Does anyone have a picture or diagram of how the switch is supposed to look?

Thanks guys,
BlueVista, I will take a close look at the bulb. It sure looks like and LED type bulb to me. I was thinking that it was a pretty hi-tech item for the time.

Bigfun, are you seeing the little tit on the lens that protrudes below the mirror? That's just there as a visual indicator the map light is on.

Yep - the bulb itself is under the clear lens. LEDs were in their infancy back then...
