Inside Raer View Mirror

The inside rear view mirror on my 70 442 convertible has some rough spots in the silvering of the mirror itself. It's too noticeable to ignore so I was going to replace it. The problem is, it's the mirror with the light in it. As far as I know these are not reproduced. I can't see where/how to take it apart. Can just the mirror be replaced, perhaps by a local shop? If so, how does it come apart?

Thanks

I have not done this myself but I know some people are buying the repop mirror and taking the glass out of it and putting it in the original mirror. I think you have to soak it in hot water to make the rubber pliable. I am sure someone on here has done it. Maybe they can explain better. oldspackrat I think has done some. I think he sells restored ones maybe?

I do restore them. I remove the glass piece & send them out to be resilvered & then reinstall them into the housing. I also polish the housing & make sure the light works. Call me for more details?

Can a repop regular mirror glass be used for an original map light mirror?

How "rare" or [scarce may be the best term] is the "map light" mirror?? My 69 has it but was gutted!! My friend in W.V. had one off his parts car, glass busted but light intact. Robbing light parts for mine. My glass is poor but usable, being a day night unit, I didn't think these couls be re silvered???

They were not that rare when new but they are getting harder to find in good condition. I have had many mirrors resilvered & have never had any complaints. It is the same glass & the same method GM used to silver them in the first place so no problems.
