how would you fix this
I am going with a modern radio so I don't need the complete restore.
the guy butcher the hole
it was painted white then black, go figure.
is there anything that will loosen the paint and not eat the plastic?
I need to pull the climate controller too
any input on attack plan

Who Why What were they thinking
the easiest way to work on the dash is with the seats, console, and shifter out. Carpet in. Steering column loose and gauges removed.
And that is just to replace the light bulbs
I had the seats and console in
The hacked radio hole helped get to the climate control.
I am not removing the climate controls just clean and inspect.
Windshield switch took 2 hrs
All of the plugs where stuck and my arms are scratched up
I'll take pict tomorrow
the easiest way to work on the dash is with the seats, console, and shifter out. Carpet in. Steering column loose and gauges removed.
And that is just to replace the light bulbs

my 70 c/s had an aftermarket radio and the dash was cut up almost as bad as yours. i was able to fabricate a plastic frame and install a factory looking radio without removing lower dash.check out my threads if you want to go that route... good luck

I am not planning on using the radio, but it would be nice if it turned on and make noise.
The radio I am using is smaller than the butchered Hole so I have to build out enough to fit it in then address the wood grain issue

Use JB Weld to reinforce the plastic dash where it's falling apart, then apply faux wood laminate.
I know they make faux wood laminate that matches what the factory used. I'm just not sure where to get it.

looks completely different now
I was too tired to vacuum just picked up the tools and loose pieces and called it a night
While I was under the dash I found the speaker. Its shot, it has a hole in the cone
Bought a heater core from Summit and it went in with out a problem.
R&R the spreader/bracket from the old on to the new one. Used Duct seal around the edge of the core to stop any future rattles.
R&R blower, tested and painted. Passenger fender is falling apart.
Found the Console extension, Still looking for the harness.
Started replacing lamps and ran out, ordered more.
Installed the map light and plugged the double wire and couldn't find the single.
The glove box light is no where to be found, switch is missing too.
Haven't figured out how to access the ash tray light yet, I love a good challenge.
Pulled the head light switch apart to relamp switch, blew a fuse and now none of the dash lights work, to tired to chase it down.
Fuse box in another cleaning day away.
Installed a dimmer switch and need bolts to attach it. I have no idea on the hardware
Carpet didn't get a grommet, so need a fix on addressing the finished look
Wood grain is metal backed. Went together easy enough.
Used the Tester pen to paint the silver back on the trim.
Messed it up 3 times.
Broke a post off the wiper switch bezel. One will do for now.
Broke the plastic yellowish backing plate that hold the top switch in place.
Crazy glued and went back in.
Greased the Climate controls
dielectric grease on all of the connectors lights and switches.
Ran out of hex head screws, I missed placed them or more than likely the guy before me didn't replace all of them. need to get my hands on some to hold the climate control in place.
Started to pull A/C vents and thought better not. I need to finish something before I start another.

You've been busy; sounds like things are going as well as can be expected.
Be careful about using dielectric grease on your connections; it is not an electrical conductor.
If your using a stock radio you should use an 8 ohm speaker.

I am using a low end blaupunkt radio.
Sometimes the cheap stuff is harder to work with
the dielectric grease is to easily the remove them next time.
They where stuck and needed some force to remove them.

When working under dash I put on welding sleeves to keep my arms from getting cut up, an old sweatshirt sleeves cut off it works also..
I do the same when working inside a door also..

Any cabinet maker will have it.. and most likely have scraps so you don't have to buy a whole sheet.

Work got in the way
had to take a break from the dash repairs
replaced dash lights with leds, new lens on the gauges, new wood grain, bezels, and AC vents
.
rebuilt the console, "shifter arm is cracked going to look for another"
installed wiring harness, liner, gear indicator, chrome and wood grain
