How firm should a seat be?

I am about to recover my 69 Cutlass beach seat and rear seat. My front seat was recovered about 10 years ago but when I sit in it I sink down. I'll check the springs when I pull it out but wonder how firm the were originally. If my springs are all good is there a way to stiffen them up?

thanks,
Steve W.

if you're sinking, your springs are likely in need of replacing. If the car's a keeper, it may be worth investing in a complete frame rebuild

As to how firm they should be, I think factory firmness was probably moderate at best when new but you can potentially set your own seats up for whatever comfort level you like when restoring them.

a good auto upholstery shop should be able to replace your springs and customize the foam replacement to suit your comfort tastes
