dying plastic dash

I picked up an ash tray door that is not the same color as the rest of my dash. I would like to dye it black. Is this a possibility or should I paint it instead? If I dye it what kind of dye will I be looking for?

Thanks

You can get dye or paint. However, since it is a plastic dash part I would suggest paint. Oldsguy dyed a leather steering wheel black with dye from a fabric store. Unfortunately, it didn't take too well and kept coming off on our hands when we drove the car. They make paint specifically for plastics that should do a good job as long as the part is cleaned before painting.

Check out Eastwood, the product is made by Sem. I have used it numerous times on aircraft interior plastics as well as my Olds and works well. There is a cleaner also made by Sem that should be used before dying. I highly recommend using their cleaner as I didn't the first time I dyed plastic and ended up doing it over.
