In my other posting ( 1st car we brought after getting married ). I removed the old carpet and today I open up the new carpet and took it out of the box. After removing the new carpet from the box I noticed that the jute is 1/2 the thickness of the old jute. Does this differential need to be made up and how is the best way? For information the replacement carpet is from ACC. I was told that the jute padding was the same and it definitely wasn't.
Showing the new carpet. Another picture showing the new carpet. The old original jute padding. Another picture of the original jute padding.
Maybe add carpet padding like they use in homes. Any local carpet store would probably have leftovers from recent installs that they'd either sell for pennies or give you outright for the relatively nominal amount you'd need.
Or return the carpet you have and get ACC's 'heavy mass backing' version of the one you have, which has a much thicker underlay. That was the option I went with on my '72 and it's a huge improvement over the standard set for those models.
The difference is 55 year old sound & heat insulation technology vs modern synthetic. It performs the same duties as the old organic pad just thinner/lighter.
If the carpet lays down in the foot wells nice n tight and lays under the sills, toe cover and tucks under the rear seat at the right length don't worry about it.
Use dyno or similar mat if you want additional sound & heat deadening. I'm not a huge fan of that stuff in an A body or gluing, but some like both. The factory didn't use glue.
I do agree there's a certain technique to obtaining a professional/OEM result, such as proper placement/poisoning and dry fitting before cutting/trimming.
Thank you to all who replied, got some really great ideas that I didn't think of. Just down the road from the farm is a carpet business I will stop in tomorrow and ask them.
