Carpet questions?

In my other posting ( 1st car we brought after getting married ). I removed the old carpet and today I open up the new carpet and took it out of the box. After removing the new carpet from the box I noticed that the jute is 1/2 the thickness of the old jute. Does this differential need to be made up and how is the best way? For information the replacement carpet is from ACC. I was told that the jute padding was the same and it definitely wasn't.

I experienced the same when I replaced carpet in the past, the original is definitely thicker. If its salvageable, I would use the original

I think some of it is salvageable, I just wondering if there is something better to use.

Maybe add carpet padding like they use in homes. Any local carpet store would probably have leftovers from recent installs that they'd either sell for pennies or give you outright for the relatively nominal amount you'd need.

Or return the carpet you have and get ACC's 'heavy mass backing' version of the one you have, which has a much thicker underlay. That was the option I went with on my '72 and it's a huge improvement over the standard set for those models.

I've bought a roll of automotive jute carpet padding and added a layer to ACC's product in the areas it seemed needed. Most all areas as I recall.

You can put a layer of foil backed foam down first, instead of the old jute.

I did the sound deadener, then the new carpet. Glue and the right technique makes for a nice job. Watch some vids.

The difference is 55 year old sound & heat insulation technology vs modern synthetic. It performs the same duties as the old organic pad just thinner/lighter.

If the carpet lays down in the foot wells nice n tight and lays under the sills, toe cover and tucks under the rear seat at the right length don't worry about it.

Use dyno or similar mat if you want additional sound & heat deadening. I'm not a huge fan of that stuff in an A body or gluing, but some like both. The factory didn't use glue.

I do agree there's a certain technique to obtaining a professional/OEM result, such as proper placement/poisoning and dry fitting before cutting/trimming.

Thank you to all who replied, got some really great ideas that I didn't think of. Just down the road from the farm is a carpet business I will stop in tomorrow and ask them.
