I want to replace the faceplates on my dash switches on my 72 Cutlass Supreme (wiper, top, A/C) which requires removal of the *****. What is the best way to remove the ***** without damaging them or the switch levers? Or, do I just need to buy new *****?

 

The ***** have itsie-bitsie allen-type screws in them. Look for them.
Unscrew them a turn or so and the ***** slide right off.

Thanks Lady72nRob71. I assume the screws are on the underside? My Cutlass is similar to yours, Supreme Convertible in triple white.

 

Wipers--First you have to remove the ****----It's held on with a hex key set screw on the RIGHT SIDE of the ****.
Then you can remove the switch from the backside of the dash....fun, fun, fun.


Cruise and/or Top Switch--No ***** to remove from the front...remove the switches from the backside of the dash.

And then...as if you wanted more "fun" you can remove the faceplates themselves by removing some VERY SMALL, VERY THIN (stamped thin sheet metal nuts) from the posts that are part of the faceplate. These posts stick through the dash plastic.

Each faceplate has 2 integral posts on the backside--SEE PIC BELOW

AC Panel *****--hex key set screw on one side of each ****. Overall panel assembly is attached to the back of the dash plastic. You don't need to remove the ***** if you are taking out the whole assembly with cables, slider arms, etc still attached.

If the switch name plates look bad, they can be replaced without removing the actual switches. Just remove the *****. They are self-adhesive thick metal 'decals' with silkscreened text. Most repro parts suppliers sell them. I did all mine for under $100. Remove them carefully with a razor blade, cutting the adhesive and lightly prying them off. Easy.

 

I bought the new faceplates, so once I remove the ***** I can proceed. I was not planning on removing the switches from the dash. So the original faceplates need to come off first - not just put the new plate over the old?

 

Right! stacking them is possible, but may look strange.
A flat razor blade will get them off with a little prying. The old adhesive will not be much of a challenge...
