AC Controls Question

Hello, question regarding AC controls on 72 Olds A body.

Background: I'm used to a 72 Chevy with the first picture's controls. When not using the system, I typically leave it on (mode) VENT and (fan) OFF. This allows some flow through ventilation. Turning the mode to OFF as well stops any flow through ventilation, and I rarely do it. I think it would kill fan power too were it to be on something other than off. It has a 5 position switch for a 4 speed fan and off. So, it allows vent and no fan.

The non-AC controls in the third picture have a 4 position switch for a 3 speed fan and off. This would allow vent and no fan.

The AC controls in the second picture have a 4 position switch for a 4 speed fan and no off. I think the blower is on in whatever speed is set when ignition on and the system is anything other than OFF. So I do not think vent and no fan is possible on my 72 H/O with AC.

Am I correct in that assumption? Thank you.

You are correct, that is the way the factory system works. Slide the lever to OFF and there is no air flow, either fan or flow-through.

Thanks. I figured our man in AZ knows the AC.

If it were my daily driver, I'd do something about it, but it is ok this way. Plus, I am going to do my granddad's routine of getting a vent windowed non AC car's black kick panel with one vent pull for the driver's side so I can have a vent for me. (Right side gets no change as AC mix door is there.)
