70 442 dash gauge bezel
70 442 dash gauge bezel
I removed my bezel and would like to repaint it. I carefully removed the woodgrain. Is there a good chrome paint to repaint the plastic chrome? Are the inside of the gauge holes supposed to be painted black? If so, does anyone have a picture showing the black.
I just received the repro bezel from Fusick and the original woodgrain fit perfectly. It depends on how fussy you are and whether you think its worth it, but there is nothing like new chrome plating for the best results. The repro comes all painted as per the factory. See the attached pictures. You can also have the bezel sent away and have it replated. You also may be pleased with chrome paint ie., Krylon chrome spray paint. It come in a small can. It's obviously the most reasonable solution.
That does look good. There is a guy on epay selling re chromed ones. He wants $145 to re chrome mine. That's a lot. I will try the paint. If I don't like it I'll go repro. Thanks for the pics.
Just a warning on the repops, Fusick is the only one making them that fit right. This is as of a year ago. Maybe the others are making a better reproduction now? On this part i would rechrome the original or go with Fusick only.
Chrometech does a nice job redoing the plastic.
The wood grain can be removed with careful use of a heat gun to soften the adhesive.
I am a proponent of refurbishing GM parts, and will only use repro parts as a last resort.

Yes, I did use the original woodgrain, which is a testament to the quality of the repro bezel. I used a release all type of product, WD 40 may work too. The heat gun approach may be the way to go as indicated above. I used two small tools to get under the woodgrain. I let the stuff soak around the edges and patiently worked away at it. You must be careful, but I did two of them, so it is possible. Good luck.
