What's the trick for securing the chrome ornament (trim piece) on the top of the shifter boot. I've tried to pinch the little side tabs which broke off immediately and tried to epoxy it in place. That worked for a little while but eventually failed. It drives me crazy hearing it vibrate against the shifter.
Any ideas welcomed..

I bent the tabs slightly (as you said they do break easily) and filled the entire "channel" around the underside of the bezel with 3M panel bonding adhesive. It is my go-to "glue" for any jobs like this. It is literally what they use to glue the body panels on new cars together and is much more durable than other epoxy brands like JB weld. It is holding up well so far. Originally, I just had the tabs bent to pinch the boot and the ring came loose very quickly. To use the panel bonding adhesive properly you should have the proper gun, but once you invest in it you will find all kinds of uses for it.

I just cleaned it with lacquer thinner. When using the gun, the two parts mix in the tip so you can just shoot it into the channel with the console turned upside down and let it settle to a somewhat level finish. Depending on the temperature it takes several hours to set up properly. I usually leave anything I glue sit at least 24 hours to fully cure. Does your ring still have the tabs or are they all broken off? Having the tabs totally covered in the glue from the underside is needed to get a strong grip.
