Guys I need help. First off this is my first post, and I am amazed at the knowledge here..I have. A restored 72 holiday coupe and a huge olds fan!!

while visiting family in Florida I came across what seems to be a hurst..1972 has rust in the roof near the rear windows, the added plus form me is has a sunroof...interior, wheels, Paint are ok..the kicker..doesn't have original engine..can you guys help me put a dollar amount on this..non running engine in complete, rust in the roof interior and plates are intact..seems real by the vin decoder. Any help and estimates on what is worth would be awesome. Thank you for all your help in

This wouldn't happen to be one of Bob Anderson's cars, would it? He thinks very highly of his rusty cars.

 

I would say $5k is a fair price.

 

^^^i If the hood is in decent shape, 5k might be ok, I sold basically the same car with orig. motor, beautiful interior,etc. a few years back for 6k.

Maybe $5-10k? That sunroof is rare. I have a '72 455 apparently out of of a '72 Hurst Olds...

Restored they are worth about $35k. I'd say your looking at more than that to bring it back....Damn, that's rough....

nope i wish...still have to knnow how bad i screwed up the interior is near perfect....only body work and a motor...i hope it is less than 35k for that

 

How handy are you? It needs a new roof. What's the base of the windshield look like? How's the base of the back window? The trunk lid looks rusted along the bottom edge. On the plus side the hood looks OK

 

we are going to find out it needs a new roof. the trunk has one bad spot. other than that it is ok..

 

Unfortunately, the rust under the half top is on the quarter panels. This is a very valuable car, but it will take $20K-$30K to do it right, and that assumes you are doing most of the labor. You need to find a rust free Supreme as a donor for the sheet metal. That will be ~$5K-7K for a decent shell (though you can part out what you don't use). Transferring the sunroof to the new roof panel will be a challenge. You'll need a correctly date coded block and heads. You'll want a correctly stamped carb as well. As you get into it, you'll find a lot more that needs to be replaced.

 

i am going to focus on getting it running...then do the body stuff..might just clear it and go patina ( just kidding)

i found a 455 with G heads local he wants 1500.00 i thought that was high??

 

A 72 had GA heads. You can find a decent core 72 motor for $300-$500. Yes $1500 is high unless it's a verifiable running rebuild.


The car looks like an 03C build date. You'll want to find parts with Julian dates before that. Blocks, heads, distributors, carbs, intakes, etc all are date coded

 

Get it running and drive the shyt out of it

or

spend way too much money to "restore" it down to the correct date coded diodes in the alernator.... and then sell it for less than that 'cause it's too pretty to drive.

Remember it's always easier to get more money than to find another 72 HO. Be glad you have the car.

Well I think we have too. The olds community is small and our cars have to be near perfect to bring money.

I am going to get it running and then decide how to tackle the body work. It will be done one day, so I am not worried. I am happy to have it.

Anybody in GA want to help get it running, let's rock.

 

Plus, if you drive it around, you educate the masses and expose it to potential buyers. Maybe one day some investor with no clue what rust is like offers you too much money for it.

 

Good point. I will eventually fix it. But get it running and making it solid is priority. Interior is clean and almost perfect if you can believe it.

Looks like a nice find. Seems like you are trying to put some numbers to it. Hard to do with those few pics but my guess is there is more rust to deal with? Things add up quick in a resto ask me how I know. You put a new part next to an old part and decide the old part looks shabby and needs to be replaced and so on and so on............maws take hold and the next thing you knw you are up to your *** in debt good luck and have fun.

 

What letter is on the heads?
It may be rough, but it is a H/O. Congrats.

 

I like it! Don't let anyone discourage you either. Did you buy it just to turn a buck or did you WANT it? If you build it it will always be YOUR car. Enjoy the build, it will probably take a while but that's a lot of the fun.

 

Its an F block, didn't F blocks come in 72's? Check to see what the VIN number on the block is, bottom of drivers side head just below the front lower head bolt I think on a small pad. Maybe its the original motor. Letter on head just above that. I like the car a good body shop should be able to change the top with no problem, unless you do the work yourself. Shouldn't be that difficult.

What ever happened with this H/O? Hopefully it is being rebuilt, the '72 H/O with a sunroof is rare and definitely a unique car. One of my favorites.
