Question 1969 Hurst Olds stripe dimensions.

Does anyone have stripe dimensions for a 1969 Hurst Olds?

Wow, I was just going to post those. Those dimensions were taken from my car for my own reference, but eventually people asked for some and there you go.

And as every car is slightly different in one or more areas, it's ok to get it "close".

Keep in mind if you want to do it "correct" you would need to assemble the car, put all the chrome bits on, and then tape off where you didn't want the gold. That's what they did originally. They had all sorts of overspray on many cars under the bottom and sometimes even on the outside spots of the white paint as well. If you want the stripes protected the best and smoother to the touch, then tape and paint the gold/black colors before the trim goes on, then clear all of it together. Then install the trim. I've seen it done both ways, and I think they look just fine either way.

There's a couple more to go with that. Have fun!

Yes, you sent them to me a while back and I am very grateful! Thanks for posting the top and scoop dimensions, I was missing those.

No problem. It's better to spread actual information than just some guesswork. Some cars may be a little bit different between them, so accuracy isn't job 1. Like one thing I've noticed is that sometimes the rocker lower stripes sometimes would follow the body break lines and dip at the wheel wells, but sometimes they didn't. By today's standards, those stripe applications were kind of abysmal. But they still were a great sales pitch plan for the era and I understand the time crunch. Note that in one area I changed the dimensions of the top fender/door/quarter stripe thickness to 1-7/8". I originally had 2", but that was in just one spot on the passenger front fender. I randomly measured a few other spots and most of the time I was getting 1-7/8". Thus the change.

Note too, the scoop decal measurements are from the original decals on my scoop, not the repros. I don't know if the repros are the exact same size/spacing as originals. If they were off a bit on applying the decals to my car, then that's another issue as I don't know. Never measured anyone else's original scoop decals. So just kind of use it as a reference.

But that front fender upper stripe bend outside the headlights seemed to always have a very slight backwards lean to it. Every original paint car I've looked at had that little nuance. Of course, sample sizes were always pretty small.

Thanks again for the dimensions for the stripes. I had a guy at a car show come up to me and wanted to sell a 1969 Cutlass. I bought it and currently making a H/O tribute. I love Oldsmobiles and always loved the 69 H/O. One question I have is the shifter location. Is the shifter mounted closer to the driver on a 69 H/O? I can not really find any mounting dimensions for it.

I know it's a clone, but there was no black stripe on the top of the gold side stripe. The fender trim was just taped off and the gold butted up against the trim piece. Unless you're just not using the trim pieces.

Looks pretty good as is, though.

As far as the shifter being to one side, that's new to me. Mine sits pretty much in the middle of the hump. If it is off-center, it's not by much. Never had a need to measure it. IIRC, the brackets are a bit off set with driver legs a tad longer, but that is the bracketry, not the shifter. The shifter/console was installed at Demmer, with trim-to-fit plastic console, so obviously it can vary from side to side. If I get a chance, I'll check my old original one for the cut shape on it.

Thanks for your reply. I do not have the mouldings that goes on top of the fender and doors. I hope to find a nice set to install at a later day. I just put the black stripe on top for now unitl I can find a nice set of fender trim. I would love to see pictures of your real H/O if you have some to send me. Thank you again for your help.

69 Hurst Olds stripe

It was probably a Supreme not a Cutlass S model. Still a beautiful car. 69 H/O, my first choice they are classy looking.
