Help - Hurst Dual gate into a 76 cutlass

Hey Guys,

Anyone install a Hurst Dual Gate 2 shifter into a 76/77 cutlass S/442 ?

I bought the whole kit from parts place and am started work on it tonight. Removed original shifter only to find that the Hurst shifter does not line up to the same holes or the same position..

I know the 1975 cutlass Hurst has the same console.. Guess I am going to have to do some massaging but leary about modifying the top of the console the original shifter poked through...

Any ideas/advice from anyone who has done an install in this application?

I have a 75 console that's was cut for a dual gate, all the auto consoles are the same. the factory had templates on where to cut out. Surprising that the kit didn't include this. But I can get you pics with dimensions tomorrow night.

Hi, I did a dualgate conversion on my girlfriends '76 Salon back in '09. The kit you're getting from the parts place doesn't have the right mounting bracket!! They show 2 brackets like the '70-'72s use but the '73 up shifters use a 1 pc heavy gauge steel bracket that wraps around the shifter & is held in place with 2 bolts at each end.I sent you a pic of it & one of the console trimming mods. You will need the correct bracket first though, don't even waste your time until you get one. Like I said those 2 little brackets that come with the parts place shifter are not right! I lucked out & found one on Ebay, maybe someone here on the C/o site has one lying around??? Take your time trimming the console!! I must have had hers in & out a half dozen times 'til I was happy with the fit. Hope this helps.......Rob

Thank you Bret,
I am going to call Hurst today to see about any additional information or templates.

At his point I am going to modify the top part of the console that holds the guide for the shifter based on that face plate. Then place the shifter where when in park it is at the top and see if it will match up...

Alex,Here's some pics of Cheryl's Salon. I posted a thread on it back in '09 on the old '73-'77 forum but it doesn't seem to come up anymore. She's had it since '82. Other than paint it had never been apart. Along with adding the dualgate, I swapped out the lazy 2.41 hi-way gears for some 3.08s & added the anti-spin carrier. The engine was detailed with the addition of an Edelbrock intake & I resealed the trans & put in a shift kit. It has true dual exhaust, using '73-'74 frt pipes and manifolds with the earlier dual-hump trans crossmember. It's a sweet running car!!! It barks the tires at almost 60 coming out of 2nd! The car's loaded with options,rally-pac,delay wipers, pwr seat, pretty much everything but cruise & a big-block!! I really was a little old ladys' car!!,she traded it in at the Olds dealer(A D Pelunis Olds near Cleveland) where Cheryl worked at the time & she snapped it right up before it even hit the used car lot!

Alex, After doing 2 dualgate conversions,1 on my buddy,Craigs '70 W31 & the one on Cheryl's '76 I found that they both had the same problem(same cable from Brothers used on both cars) Once together I couldn't get enough adjustment to get everything to work. The geometry just wasn't right. If I adjusted it so it would go in park,it wouldn't go all the way down to 1st,if I adjusted it so it would go into 1st,it wouldn't go into park. You'll notice that the cable on the trans end has the hole for the pin drilled way back towards the rubber bellows, after some trial & error I decided to try drilling a new hole towards the front of the cable(be careful, make sure the hole is centered,as there's not much room). It made a huge difference!! everything worked as it should. While your under your car make sure all your back-drive linkage(the pivots & rods that go up to the column) are in good shape. I would replace the half round plastic bushing that's at the pivot on the frame for sure as it wears out over time. I pm'd you my cell, call me if you need any help.

Sounds good Rob,Thanks for the diagram. Will order the cable from BAP today and look for that new bushing on the pivot you mentioned.
Ron should have my bracket in mail I would hope this week.
