I have a 1972 Convertible Cutlass with the original 350 motor. I bought a set of Hooker headers a while back and have yet to install them. I wanted to know which brand and model of a high torque starter would be the best fit for this configuration as far as clearance and reliability goes. I do plan on wrapping the starter with heat wrap as well.

 

I use powermaster 9510 with my hooker headers. Mine is a big block don't know if that makes a difference or not.

 

The mini starter is not mandatory with headers but usually helpful... You may have to shim the starter though to get the right mesh with the ring gear teeth.

 

I used the Powermaster 9610 on my 76 olds 350 with hedmann headers. Fit great, nice weight saving. Didn't use heat wrap ( no issues to date with heat soak) The only thing I didn't like initially was louder cranking noise. I got use to it now sounds normal go figure.

I use a stock starter with my long tubes . No issues . I did however make a harness to quickly disconnect the starter wich makes it so easy. To shim it I use fender shims it makes it easier and you don't have to completly unbolt the starter as they can be pushed in.

 

I like the mini starters just for the ease of installation, they are much lighter. You don't have to remove the starter to install stock shims, they are slotted on the ends, so only one bolt needs to come out.

 

I just don't like the starter shims lol.
