Original vs Tamraz OAI Hood

Aside from one being original (and steel I believe) and a Tamraz being fiber glass, what are the real differences between the hood?

To get an original one in good shape, it seems to be around $1300 whereas for the reproduction Tamraz hood, its about $350. What are the pros and cons?

Also, what is the prep work (and cost) involved in getting the hood ready, painted, and installed?

Thanks

If you can find an original(steel framed) OAI in good shape for $1300, let me know, I'll buy it! Obviously, besides the construction of the two, price if a huge difference.....

If you can get get an original OAI hood in GOOD shape for $1300, it better be sitting in your garage because nice originals rarely ever go that cheap! Even the repops from Thornton will cost you $2500 plus shipped to you. Also, that $350 price you quoted is for a stripped pin on hood for race cars, It will cost you $708 shipped for the bolt on style from Tamraz. If you have access to the above mentioned GOOD SHAPE original $1300 hood you better jump on it because even if you did not use it you could sell it for more and buy one of the cheaper hoods and have extra bucks to put into your pocket or towards your project(s)!

If you think you found a rare part or car don't let everyone on this board know the source as it will be bought out from under you Or, it will invite more bidders to the party and the price won't be such a great deal in the end.

You guys need to look at a couple of things. $1,300 is the opening bid. When somebody bids that, it will say reserve not met. He has a buy it now price of $2,500. This is also a seller with zero feedback. It will be interesting to watch. I would be very cautious.

Exactly! That means he probably had a reserve of $2500 and shipping is set at $250 so this hood would cost $2750 not $1300. Ebay ads can be very misleading and this one is no different. The zero feedback would also worry me if I was bidding. Also, bidding has ended on this item so apparently everbody was also worried about this being a new, no feedback Ebay member!

Good points with this post and the one before. Also, if you look at the description on that auction, the seller didn't provide any details to the condition or history. 3 vague sentences doesn't cut it if you want to move something that expensive.

The original hood will be worth more in the future.

I paid $900 about 10 years ago for a mint 70 hood.

If you can afford it, the original is the way to go.

The Tamraz/Parts Place hoods, with the steel bottom, are still much different than the originals,or even a Thornton. The steel underside has different shapes & openings, compared to an original or Thornton. There have been only a few that I have seen on cars so far,and they didn't fit any better than the rest. You must also realize that even the original GM hoods needed some tweaking when they were installed at the factory. If your car did not come with one originally, being a Cutlass or similar, then I would just opt for a repop. If you have a 442 or W-car,that came with OAI originally, then I would only put a real one on there.Otherwise it will be the sore spot of the whole outcome. Glasstek is in the same town as The Parts Place, and Tamraz's,so they should still be the ones supplying the all-glass repop hoods. They are not all that bad.The underside is a duplicate appearance of an OEM,but made from glass instead of metal. The one on my 72 below is an early one, that I bought from Tamraz in 1995,and I believe it came from Glasstek.Surprisingly,it fit very nice,as you can see.I consider myself lucky.I had it on another car for a year before I put it on this one,and it fit the other car just as well.most of the time,I see the rear lip sticking up too high, but this one was/is good.Yes,I had a real hood at the time, but it made no sense to put it on here,as the value would not change on this particular car.
