So I'm doing a full stereo in my 72 cutlass. The instructions for installing the radio in the dash are non existent. The radio has black plastic on the 2 shafts with multiple nuts. Can someone help me with how this thing is supposed to go in? Do the black pieces stay on, or come off? I normally cut the dash for a modern radio, so this is new territory for me. Thanks in advance

Looking at your pictures, you can see the horizontal slots where the shafts protrude through the chassis that allows increasing or decreasing the distance between the shafts to match the **** spacing in your dash. Adjust those first by loosening the nuts that holds the shafts in the chassis, disengaging the pear-shaped washer from the holes in the chassis, and adjusting as required, then tightening up the nuts once the pear-shaped washers are re-engaged in the guide holes in the chassis. Next, remove all of the washers and nuts on the shaft except for the back nut and a washer of sufficient size to engage your shaft openings in your dash. Insert the radio into the dash from the back and adjust these nuts as required until the faceplate is flush with the dash opening when the chassis is held in place. Finally, add washers and nuts to the shafts on the front side of the dash opening to lock the shafts into the dash. Tighten these outer nuts sufficiently to hold the radio in place. On the rear of the chassis, there should be a stud / nut that can be used to attached a stiffening bracket to the back of the chassis and attached to some structure under the dash to support the radio and prevent it from vibrating and ripping holes in your **** openings in your dash when you go down a bumpy road. You will likely need to fabricate this bracket unless your radio came with one.

Yes, as above, I did one of those radios 2 years ago in my 72 D88, they are nice, some trial and error, but it went pretty smooth, be sure to use bracket on rear of radio, seems like they will not warranty radio if not, common sense says you need it anyway, I'll post pics of mine later
I have several rolls (or more) of perforated plumbers tape (both copper & galvanized). Can find use of it for tons of things esp. fastening metal/PVC conduit/duct work to hang from basement/crawlspace stringers, roof/attic rafters, etc. I've seen it used/fabricated on several car stereo dash systems. Good stuff.
Here's my install, wrapped some duct tape around strap, edges were sharp. direct fit into dash, no mods. from below, lower dash is out. support strap. rear of radio.
