Is there any info or data sheet. That states the rear wing being original?
it seems every post I come across people say that the wing is not original or shouldn't be there.
Same thing with a guy in my town, he has a w30 hard top, without the wing...he sais that its not correct to have the wing...

Im confused on the w30 optioned hard top. Or w25 442 hardtop......i always thought that option would just have a wing.....

 

Oh My Gosh. Let me own and step up as The number one towel rack hater. Let me explain why.

Oldsmobile killed an A body. Killed it. The spoiler aka Towel Rack broke up the perfect body lines. Look at any A body Olds without a towel rack compared to a Real car without it. Not even on the same page.

I hate them. One out of what ten thousand had them? It completely f's up the most beautiful A body Body line ever. Did I say hate them. I was born in the sixties. I am the last of seven. Do you want to know how many factory 442's I saw with a towel rack? I saw ONE. ONE. I hate them. It was Never seen in the seventies or eighties. Now Every clown Has to have it. Clowns 🤡

 

PS: You know why I loved my 70 SX?
It was a flat hood car that would kick your ***. F all this look at me bullshirt.

 

Yeah, I think through the entire 70s and 80s I saw one 442 with a rear spoiler. And it looked out of place.

 

Off the top of my head that wing only came factory standard on 2 models. The 1969 Hurst Olds and the 1970 Rallye 350.

All years that coincide with it's availability and besides those 2 models, are dealer option as far as I know. Then there is the aftermarket ...

I'm figuring your friend is speaking to factory born specificity.

In addition, no1oldsfan, no need to hold back... 😁. And I agree with you, my car came with the spoiler sealed new. I don't want it on my car. It's been collecting dust going on 8 years.

 

I go to a lot of car shows and cruises. People frequently ask why I didn’t put the W-25 style hood on, or the wing on the trunk. They are so common now, it’s pretty bad when the easiest way to stand out is to keep it stock!! Not to mention I have the OAI under the bumper scoops on my car, the hood and scoops would be a bit redundant.

 

The W35 spoiler was introduced as a factory option as a running change in the 1970 model year. According to the bulletin introducing it, it was available on cars produced about the first of January of 1970.

In the mid 70s when I first got interested in these cars, I believe I only saw one factory W35 car. It was a standard 442 owned by one of my friend's older brothers. It was a loaded twilight blue car with white stripes, he was the second owner. The original owner must have checked every box except W30. It had the spoiler along with the W25 hood, dual gate shifter, AC, PS, PW, PL, Stereo with 8 track player, rally gauges and probably other options I have forgotten. Unfortunately, in 1976, he lost doing a burn out and crashed into a gas station pump island. The car was totaled.

 

I personally don't have an issue if someone wants to put on a W35 spoiler that wants one. If you're not paying for it, don't worry about it. You have no control. I don't even care if you like it or hate it. As long as the owner is satisfied, that's all that matters. The 69 H/O wing wasn't technically a factory option, it was included in the conversion process. But that wing was what carried over to the W35 RPO. It looks a bit silly, but it completes the over-the-top look the H/O was to present, I suppose. At least they didn't put dual chevy stripes on the trunklid.

I found a cheap, authentic, W-25 hood many many moons ago and put it on my 71 442 (no spoiler though) because 1) I like the look, 2) it was too good of a deal to pass up at the time at $150. I already had an OAI air cleaner laying around. I'm sure I could sell that set up if I choose. But I kept the original hood with the center stripe as well. If you don't like that, it's ok. It's not going to change my mind. Same with the spoiler. If you like it and want it, add it. If you don't care for them, don't put it on.

 

Also to add to this. The spoilers were never available from the factory on a Cutlass Supreme.

It is funny sometimes what people think they know as truth. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. He knows a guy that supposedly worked for GM back in the day for over twenty years. He told my friend that Oldsmobile never made a 442 convertible. 🤣😂

 

The wing was standard equipment on the 1969 H/O. The RPO W35 wing was a mandatory option on the Rallye for part of the model year. This Dealer Information Bulletin from Feb 1970 shows it.

As far as availability on other models, RPO W35 was an available factory option for the 1970 and 1971 model years. It was also available as a dealer-installed kit.
