I was hoping someone could help.

I’m looking to purchase a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass and wanted to decode the Cowl Tag.

details are:

ST 77-33687 R 17223 BDY

TR 947 75 A PNT

06D234

if someone could help decode it would be much appreciated.

Hey Sam, welcome aboard.

The first 2 numbers after ST are 71, so it is indeed a 1971 model. The next three digits 336 indicate it was born a V8 Cutlass.

The rest I will have to dig for....

The "R" after the 33687 cutlass v8 code is for the Arlington, Texas assembly plant. 947 is a white bench seat interior, 75 is your paint code "matador red" the A is a white vinyl top. The 06D is the 4th week of June '71 when your car was built. Not sure what the "234" is after your build date

The 87 in the sequence 33687 indicates it is a Holiday Coupe (2 door without pillar between front and rear windows).

33687: 3 = GM division = Oldsmobile; 36 = model series = Cutlass V8; 87 = body type = hardtop coupe
R = assembly plant = Arlington TX
17223 BDY = Fisher Body production number (this number has no relationship to your vehicle identification number)
TR 947 = interior color and front seat type = white interior with a bench seat
75 A PNT = lower and upper body "color" = matador red (75) with a white vinyl top (A)
06D = time build code = June (06), fourth week of that month (D), 1971
234 = ?
