'70 M21 Is Supposed To Be Original To The Car - Is It A Restamp?

Last question for the CO gang. When I spoke with the guy who did the resto on this 70 442 4 speed, he told me it is the original tranny to the car. I pulled it today and went to verify the numbers, but am concerned that it might be a restamp. The date code P0P08B represents a 1970 Sept 8 M21, but this car was built in October of '69. Does the code represent the date the trans was built - if so would it be a P9P08B? The VIN matches - does it look like a legit original stamping?

It is a 10 spline single band input shaft unit with the right tailshaft casting #. Thanks in advance for the help on this and the other questions.

The second digit of the date code is the model year, not the build year.

I'll let someone else comment on the stamping itself. I've only seen a few of these in person and have no pics to compare it to. First impression is it looks good though compared to other original parts I've seen.

The rough casting around the VIN is completely consistent with the rest of the casting. I don't any evidence of an old number being ground down and a new VIN stamp being put in place.

yeah, as for reasons Terry said, there is no way that is a restamp. Or at least very improbable. And most likely no way its a case that was never stamped and then stamped later in its life.

How does the VIN derivative match up to the one stamped on the engine block?

With the second digit being the model year, the date code breaks out to September 8, 1969. I thought the model year "0" looked a little different than the day-of-the-month "0" on the transmission casing but stampings have a weird way of not looking consistent at times (you should see the VIN derivative stamping on the block of my '69 4-4-2 - I think someone had a little too much liquid lunch (or breakfast!) that day). After looking at the stampings on the transmission casing, it surely looks legit to me. Now, if the VIN derivative stamping on the transmission casing matches the VIN derivative stamping on the engine block, and both are consistent with the VIN on the car...

The numbers are the same, and both match the VIN. I'm convinced - thank you all for your help.

Also, here's a pic of the block stamping. It seems very high on the pad, and I'm worried the the block has been decked - what do you guys think?

maybe but that looks more like the stamping machine was not aligned properly. Form what others have said no one really worried about us checking stampings 50 years later.

My block stamping is nice and crisp but on my m21 it's not even in the usual place. I had a friend who is an expert in 68-72 a bodies and he's never seen one where it is but he primarily looks at Lancing cars and mine is a NJ car
