Might need it again for what? What did you need it for the first time? The original bill of sale doesn't prove anything about current ownership. It was never even proof of ownership for the original owner. All it shows is that he paid for it. He might have titled the car in his wife's name, another relative, or anybody. As I say, get it out and show it!

IMHO

The various state laws regarding titles/inspections etc. add to a thread that may [or may not] be able to solve the problem,
