Question Trouble starting after seting 5 hours or more

I have a 86 olds with the 307, after I let it set for 5 hours or more I have to give it a shot or 2 of carburetor cleaner to get the fuel picked up so it will run but if it sets 1 or 2 hours its fine and will fire up first hit every time. Any help will be great. thanks

I would look at choke operation first. Does it try to start and just won't stay running?

Thanks on the first start it will hit one good time and after that I have to hit it with the carb cleaner and pump the gas pedal and it will fire right up but if you don't ether put gas in the carb or hit it with the carb cleaner, it wont pick up the gas, after that its fine for the rest of the day, it will start first time with out any help, I can just stick my hand in throw the window and start it and don't have to touch nothing. but yea I'm going to check the chock take the housing off and spay it with some WD-40 and see if that helps. If I can get my lazy but out there to do it today. and thanks again patrick

Are you setting the choke by pumping the throttle once before starting? This process provides an initial priming of fuel and limits air flow through the carb for a cold start.

yea I do but it wont start until I give it a shot or two of starting fluid or a dab of gas in the carb seems like the gas is bleeding back. Thanks Eric

I'd pop the air cleaner lid with the engine off after it sits, look down the carb throat and operate the throttle. There should be 2 solid sprays of fuel.

You don't need to crank it. Leave the engine off and operate the throttle while looking in the carb. Your making sure there is fuel in the carb and the accelerator pump is working after it sits.
