screw type ?

Hello,

I'm a newbie from Germany. I have already presented.

I want to disassemble my steering wheel. Itīs a ī67 olds 98 convertible.
But I need a puller. Does anyone know which screw thread in the steering wheel is?

Then I build the tool itself.

Thank you.

Figure 9A-5 on page 9A-4 of the 1967 Olds Chassis Service Manual (available for free at wildaboutcars.com, which is free to join) shows a steering wheel puller connected by two threaded bolts whose size is given as 5/16" 18 x 3-1/2 inches.

Here's a bolt like this, but it's 3-inches instead of 3.5 inches.

Your puller will work MUCH better if you make also spacer tubes that the two 5/16-18 bolts pass thru. Make the spacers just the right length. You want at elast 4-5 threads of engagement in the steering wheel. Tighten the 5/16" bolts thru the puller main bar and spacers, to the steering wheel, forming a tight secure unit. I have found that a 3/8" or 10mm forcing screw is usually adequate. Fine thread is better. Pointy forcing screw helps keep it where it belongs. Spacer tubes may need to be notched at the bottom to clear portions of the steering wheel.

I used a 3/8 forcing screw, grade 8, so with the 1/2" drive of the securing screws I need only a 1/2-9/16 wrench to complete the kit and make it oh so easy.

I have not had time to photo my setup made like this yet.
I made 3 lengths of tube for 3 lengths of spacers, due to variance in steering wheel designs.
