rochester 4gc carb....

ok i found, and im not exagerating, 1/2 of dirt and sand under the floats in the 4cg carb yesterday when i was attempting to rebuild it... now.. im cleaning this thing good but have a question or two... 1) the accelerator pump that came with the kit is tight in the cylender...is it suppose to be like that??? and 2)...i forgot where a large mechanical spring goes??? any ideas its about 2 inces long and has hooks on each end... i guess i should of been paying more attention... thanks anyone!!

The accel plunger should be a bit tight since it needs to create a seal to be able to pump gas. When the whole thing is wet with gas, ti should move easier. You could wipe a very thin smear of grease along the bore if you feel it is necessary.
Is it a leather seal or a rubber seal?

A large spring with a hook on each end?
Extension or compression?
How large (length and diameter)?
By the sound of it, and if it's an extension spring, it's probably your throttle return spring.

i have a rubber seal which i know isnt as good as the leather beacuse ethenol eats the rubber, right? The spring is a extention spring. I looked at manuals online but and lost as to where it hooks both ends to, so if these letters where the spring it would be (%%%%%%%%) <that long so about 1 3/4 inches long a half inch in diameter. thank you!!!!!!

A modern rubber seal will be fine, as it will be a compound that's resistant to alcohols.
An older seal may or may not be, as it wasn't in the design specifications.

I've never taken apart a 4GC, so I can't be specific about that spring - sorry.

As for all the crud - heck yeah, that'll make it not want to get up and go!

Just find the spring on an exploded view. I'm surprised tere isn't one with the rebuild kit.
There always used to be.

No large spring with hooks on the ends goes inside a 4GC that I know of. I am no 4GC expert but I spent a lot of time studying them to rebuild mine. Are you sure it is not just your throttle return spring for the external linkage?

Reference material

Go to newagemetal.com and look up the year and model of the carb. See if you can find the spring in the exploded view to match up with yours. gl

Hey Fasteddi - can you take a few pics of your fab work on the trans linkage?

That's the way - Git 'er done!

Better to be driving it than sitting on the porch staring at it.
