Oil Pan Gaskets
#2
- Remove motor mount through-bolts
- Jack up engine a few inches (crank just behind harmonic balancer is a good jacking point)
- Insert lumber between motor mount area and frame to support engine
- Remove oil pan screws
- Remove oil pan
- Remove oil pan gaskets (jackhammer and flamethrower recommended)
- Clean surfaces
- Install new gaskets, using RTV at junctions, and possibly smearing everywhere else, depending on preferences
- Reinstall pan and tighten screws
- Lower engine and reinstall mount bolts
- Consider changing timing set and water pump while the pan is down, since it has to come down at least a bit to remove timing cover

While it's possible, once you go through all the steps called out in the CSM, you're only a few bellhousing and torque converter bolts away from simply pulling the engine. You'll be MUCH happier if you just do that. It's a whole lot easier changing the gasket with the engine upside down on a stand instead of trying to do this under the car while oil is dripping in your face.
