Whoa buddy! Sort of confusing. I imagine that's how thoughts jumble through my head sometimes though.

You have an Olds 350 with smog era #8 heads.

The easiest way to ID the transmission is to look at the pan and count the bolts. I bet it is a TH350 or maybe a 2004R

395558 2 is a typical Olds 350 engine (same casting number 68-76)
36R174901 is the VIN derivative of the car it came from ( 3-Olds, 6-1976 production, R-Arlington TX production, 174901-last 6 digits of the cars VIN)
#8 heads as Jesse indicated are smog heads consistent with a 1976 350
411990 is the engine production number
Transmission is likely a TH350
Those engines were typically painted blue in 1976 so that's normal.

16 bolts sounds like a 200 4R transmission. That's good as it gives almost the same 1,2,3 gearing but final drive is .67:1. Do you know what gear ratio the rear end has?
Carbs and intakes are personal preference. Lots of car folks like the Edelbrock series of intakes. You'll probably be happy with a carb that flows 700 cfm or more.
