Muffler Question

Muffler Question
This is not the typical "which muffler is better".
I am wondering about the correct inlet and outlet locations for a 1972 Cutlass.
Currently on the car are mufflers with offset inlet and centre outler. I thought someone told me once that A-bodies (all GM) should have offset/offset mufflers.
Which is the correct layout?

My friend's 72 S has offset in (to the inside) and offset out (to the outside).
My 72 Cutlass Surpreme convertible also has offset in (to the inside) and center out.
I don't think this is the correct configuration, but I am probably going to replace them with the same configuration using flowmasters because I don't want to replace the pipes right now.

Paul,
I just checked the 72 Assembly Manual and the diagrams for dual exhaust are a little tricky to see but from the engine side the exhaust enters on the inboard side of the muffler, and exits on the outboard side. Check section 8.
Also look in the 72 CSM (also section 8) starting on 8-22. The pics for the A body are really small and harder to see, but should be mimicked by the B/C exhausts. Those ones (8-22 & 8-23) clearly show offset / offset for dual systems.
