I have seen all kinds of back woods ways but the best and correct way is with a press.

I removed the axles on my 8.5 with a slide hammer. I then took them to a machine shop to have the old bearings removed and new ones pressed on. I think they charged me 30 bucks.

A slide hammer is the best way to pull the axles, but I've done it by flipping the brake drum around, loosely installing three of the lug nuts (flat side in) and using the drum as a slide hammer. If you really have to wail on it, you can bend the drum, so using an old drum is a better idea.
