Heat control valve
Heat control valve
Hi, I need to replace the heat control valve on my 65 442, this is the valve that threads into the rear of the intake manifold on A/C cars and has a heater hose attached. My question is does this valve interchange with a full size car with the 425?
I believe that is the same for 65 and 66 a body or big car. I have one from a 66 98 that looks good and the valve works. I have never had it hooked up to know if it leaks water. If you want to try it I would do $12 shipped.
Oh boy. There's some weirdness with the 65 442 hot water valve. Basically both A/C and non-A/C cars have it, but on a non-A/C car they used it to reduce pressure thru the heater core and just didn't connect a vacuum source to it. That was before they figured out they could put an orificed nipple on the intake to accomplish the same thing.
That said, unless you find an NOS 442-specific piece (don't have parts books handy so can't give you the #), one from a 425/455 A/C car should work fine. Can about guarantee anything current any parts store will have will be a one-size-fits-all anyway.

I know they are made two ways
1) vacuum lets juice flow
B) vacuum stops the flow of hot juice.
So, maybe if you are going to run it as a throttle valve, w/o vacuum, make sure it is open when there is no vacuum signal, before installing.
Watch the thread size too- 3/8" NPT is common thru 1967 or so, then 1/2" NPT for a bit, then 3/4" NPT later. I calibrated my hand so it's "little finger size, thumb size, or larger than thumb."

Reason I ask is I'm getting a resonance out of the heater when the temp control is moved to the hot position while cruising. Move it back to cold and sound isn't present. I've traced it to the valve. The new version from 4 seasons is restricted in the ID unlike OEM and its causing an interaction with the flow causing a very annoying woowooowooowoo at about 1700-2500 rpm. I tried drilling it out as far as possible without breaking through but no luck. Anyone else experience this or know of another company reproducing this valve?
