All GM divisions used different distributor bodies and drive gears. They are not interchangeable. Not only does the Chevy turn in the opposite direction (which by itself is not a problem), but the Chevy distributor body is longer and the oil pump drive shaft interface is completely different. Olds uses a hex drive, Chevy uses blade.

Hi Vette,
You might want to scope out the HEI units for sale on EBay.. I got one for my 330 for 55 bucks, including the shipping. I was surprised at how nice it looks and how well it appears to be made. There is no way to buy a junkyard Old housing and add all the replacement parts for this kind of money... The coil alone is almost 30 bucks.. food for thought anyway. I'm sure there are those who might balk at one of these, but I'm soon ready to drop mine in. I'll post the results when I do. Good luck with your project! Cheers, Mike
Here is the link to the one I bought..

And due to the fact that the Ch**y dis turns opposite, the pick-up coil windings are wound opposite also and you cannot use them as back up parts...how do I know this...
the plastic sheath for the pick-up plug is colour coded to ID the coil...black, white, yellow etc...six cyl., eight cyl., Ch**y, Olds...

I bought one. The price was right. When it arrived home, the box read... Made In China. F.Y.I.
I haven't tried it out yet.
I've heard that they have HEI distributers available that go inside of your old distributer. That would be interesting. I wonder if they have them for Oldsmobiles?
This question has been discussed here before. You might want to search the site for more info.
