egr problems

I have a 1973 Old Cutlass Supreme I bought and put back in the road approx 5 yrs ago, with 350 4 bbl automatic with AC. I have had hesitation issues mostly when cold I have recently done complete tune up, choke adjustment and installed new fuel pump. I just plugged the vacuum line in front of the EGR valve and removed my spark delay valve and used a plastic 3/16 connector. I advanced the timing enough that I'm pulling good vacuum and I do not hear any pinging. It seems to be running much better but I noticed my spark delay had been in the vacuum line that runs from under the carburetor to the distributor. Where the TVC switch is the tower (the top part) was missing but the base is still attached to the manifold. I figure I can run it without the TVC switch being used and I do not seem to have a vacuum leak. Am I creating a problem by routing my vacuum in this fashion?
