Coolent Recovery Advice
My 67 Cruiser has an aftermarket recovery tank in it that I need to replace.
Here's my question. There are two Dorman systems that I'm looking at.
- 54002 has just a twist on cap on their tank.
- 54003 uses a radiator cap their tank.
Which one should I use?
I'm a little confused how coolant flows back into the radiator since the radiator has a pressure cap on it and would shut as soon as the pressure drop blocking the suction created when the coolant cools.
As always, thanks for any help,
Jim

You will need a recovery type cap on your radiator in order for the coolant to be drawn from the overflow tank back to the radiator. A one-way cap allows overflow to occur but blocks the coolant from being drawn back into the radiator when the system cools and creates a vacuum.

The 54002 would be the correct part for your car. Your recovery tank should not be pressurized.
You do know that you do not need a special kit or a purpose-built tank, right?

I prefer coolant recovery tanks, both for a little more capacity, environmental reasons, and to keep the radiator full when cold for anti-rusting on top.
However, I know they are not factory correct. On my chevy, I have a tank wired to the frame horn that my granddad put there. Sort of ad hoc, but it's been there 45 years, so I am loathe to move it. But, on my Olds, there should be none. I wish that there were "stealth tanks" made of black plastic that chilled out right next to the radiator and looked close to invisible.
Or I may just hang a 70s one on there and do right the best I can.

Thanks everyone. I will get the 54002 and a cap from Napa if they have one. Is there a way to tell what kind of cap you have?
Eric, yes, I have seen some pretty cool and creative ideas at the hot rod shows.

The ingenuity and uniqueness of rat rods is what makes me love them. Someday I will build one just for $hits and giggles. Now all I need is to convince the wife that we (I) need another toy.... Tedd
